Information for Call for Nominations for 2025 Election

We have three positions on the NYSPRA Executive Board up for election for two-year terms beginning May 1, 2025. The positions are: Vice President/President Elect, Treasurer and Secretary. A complete description of each position can be found below.

The Executive Board works collaboratively to make sure the work is manageable for all. As an all-volunteer board, we rely on the talents and generosity of our member-officers while being sensitive to the fact that we all have "day jobs."

And there are benefits, of course! NYSPRA covers the officers' registration fee for the Annual Spring NYSPRA Conference. To ensure New York is represented at the national level, the president also receives free registration and a stipend to attend NSPRA’s Annual Conference. Information about our current officers can be found here.

If you have any questions, please contact the nyspra email at nyspra@nyspra.org

Open positions on the NYSPRA Executive Board

All terms will run from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2027

Vice President/President Elect – Performs all duties of the President in the event of the inability of the president to act; assists with the membership function; and assumes the office of president (2-year term) following completion of a term as President-elect (2-year term). S/he shall be a member of the National School Public Relations Association. Remains on the board for two years after serving as President in the role of Immediate Past President.

The Communicator of the Year award, which is being awarded for the ninth year, is meant to recognize school communications professionals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening relationships between public schools and the students, families and communities they serve. The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.

“We wrap our arms around our school communities every day,” said Natalia. “Education has had a rough road, but there's not much more important - at the sum of its parts - than contributing to students finding their footing in this universe. Relationships are at the heart of what we do. I have immense appreciation for everyone in our profession and across the education field. I'm grateful to be recognized with this award and to be a member of an inspiring tribe of superstars who improve their school communities every day.”

“Natalia Baage is a passionate communicator, storyteller, advocate for students and cheerleader for public education. She embodies the culture and the values - trust, respect, collaboration and the pursuit of excellence - of our organization at Southern Westchester BOCES,” said Southern Westchester BOCES Communications Director, Brian Howard. “She proves herself integral to ensuring that our communications teams’ efforts are precise, effective and deliberate. As her director for the past nine years, I rely upon Natalia as a trusted thought partner and sounding board, as well as an ambassador for our service in our component district region”

The example Natalia sets for her colleagues shows a high standard for quality work and respectful interaction. She is a leader during staff retreats, planning rich agendas of team building, goal-setting and reflective modules that are consistently rewarding for all participants. She boasts 42 NSPRA and NYSPRA awards for her work, including 14 first-place Awards of Excellence. She was also an NSPRA 35-Under-35 honoree.

Natalia has worked closely with the Valhalla Union Free School District for over a decade and has shown her unwavering commitment to the enhancement of communication and education, and to strengthening relationships within the district.

“Natalia is an exceptional advocate for education and for the Valhalla School District and has redefined what it means to be a School Public Relations Specialist. She consistently demonstrates exemplary leadership and communication skills as a trusted advisor,” said Valhalla Union Free School District Superintendent, Kevin McLeod. “Her work has made us realize that the profession is about more than taking pictures, posting on social media and updating websites. Natalia is a dependable counsel who has earned an indispensable seat at the leadership table.”

In every respect, Natalia is the embodiment of the Communicator of the Year. Her contributions have consistently benefited school communications and public education locally, regionally and statewide.

“Natalia Baage is a shining example of the profession of school public relations,” said NYSPRA President Krystyna Baumgartner, APR. “She serves her district at the highest level and produces award-winning work that pushes the narrative of the good work being done in their schools forward. Natalia also works hard to help others in the profession; she helps to lead a regional collegial circle that shares ideas and provides professional development opportunities. She is committed to not only being the best practitioner that she can be but in mentoring and helping others become better as well.”

Nicholas Filipowski named 2022 Communicator of the Year

The New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) is thrilled to announce that Nicholas Filipowski, Director of Communications at the Williamsville Central School District, has been named our 2022 Communicator of the Year.

The Communicator of the Year award, which is being awarded for the seventh year, is meant to recognize school communications professionals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening relationships between public schools and the students, families and communities they serve. The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.

“It’s incredibly humbling to be recognized as the Communicator of the Year,” Filipowski said. “There is validation in the work we do but also reaffirms there is still more to do to ensure that pathways for communication remain open, that we build upon the relationships in our school community, and continue to maintain the trust of our stakeholders.”

Since joining the Williamsville Central School District as Director of Communications, Nick's leadership and collaboration has propelled the district’s work to support public education and implement methods of communication via authentic engagement throughout the school community.

“Nick is thoughtful in how he approaches important ideas that need to be conveyed throughout the school community,” Daniel Wahl, principal of Transit Middle School said. “His disciplined approach provides time to discuss ideas with principals from each level, consider the various perspectives, and craft communications that resonate more deeply with all stakeholders providing more efficient, effective, and purposeful communication.”

With sensitive issues such as masking and vaccinations dominating headlines around the state and tensions rising from frustrated parents, Nick developed ways to continually shift positive energy and focus back on Williamsville students and staff. He developed monthly school spotlight videos, highlighting academic initiatives, mental health supports, and acts of kindness within the district. A different school was chosen each month and the videos premiered at the district’s Board of Education meeting, and then promoted on the district YouTube channel.

“Nick considers the role of public schools within the context of our greater society,” Wahl said. “He understands that schools are part of a broader ecosystem where teachers, parents, and students are living during a time when social, political, racial, personal safety, and public health concerns are at the forefront of their lives. Nick's approach to communication not only conveys information, but fosters a sense of trust and faith in our school district as an institution.”

He also developed videos for the district’s #Willpower campaign in which student leaders shared strategies for mental health and community unity.

“Because of Nick, our community is able to see public education in the best light possible – at a time when public education and educators are challenged – by parents or community members attempting to control the narrative or curriculum,” Williamsville superintendent Dr. Darren Brown-Hall said. “He embodies all of the attributes you desire in an awardee.”

“Nick has done a remarkable job in growing the Williamsville communications program and I couldn’t be happier to recognize his efforts and work with this distinction,” NYSPRA president Steve King said.

Filipowski was chosen by a panel of judges who work in school communications outside of New York state.

A message from the president: NYSPRA earns Mark of Distinction from NSPRA

It was announced yesterday that for the fifth consecutive year, NYSPRA has been awarded a “Mark of Distinction” award from the National School Public Relations Association in the area of professional development/PR skill building.

This is a great honor for our chapter and I want to thank the NYSPRA board – Vice President/President-Elect Krystyna Baumgartner, APR, Secretary Sapna Kollali, Treasurer Jake Mendlinger, and Immediate Past President Adrienne Leon, APR for all their hard work in making this possible.

This past year has tested all of us – emotionally, mentally and physically. Working in School PR can often feel isolating, and yet, we had the good fortune to be able to come together on a number of occasions this year, whether it was one of our virtual learning sessions, or at our conference in Syracuse in March. The connectivity we have with one another matters so much, and it is something I am incredibly grateful for.

This accomplishment would not be possible without all of you. Without your involvement and engagement in our activities and events, NYSPRA would not be what it is today. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

As a board, we are excited to build upon the foundation that has been established and continue to deliver a professional development support program that meets your needs and connects you with colleagues around the state who “do what we do.” More great things to come.

The New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) is pleased to announce that Ellen Lane, Communications Director at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES, has been named the 2021 Communicator of the Year.

The Communicator of the Year award, which is being awarded for the sixth year, is meant to recognize school communications professionals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening relationships between public schools and the students, families and communities they serve. The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.

Since her arrival at PNW BOCES in 2010, Lane, who oversees a team of 18, has embraced and pioneered 21st century communications tools, bringing mobile apps, digital communications, livestream captioning and live production video to BOCES and the districts it serves. She has also broadened the scope of the service turning it into a one-stop shop for all of a school district’s communications needs.

“As a former journalist, I decided long ago that if I worked in public relations, it would have to be for an entity or a cause that I believed in,” Lane said. “As a parent, I could not think of a more important cause than education. I was touched and delighted to receive this award because I have so much respect for my peers and the great work school public relations professionals are doing all across New York.”

Lane arrived at a time when school districts were feeling the effects of the 2008 recession and money was tight. She began by offering free workshops for school leaders with titles like: “How to Communicate on a Shoestring.” Lane met school districts at their level, built relationships and then respectfully led the way to improved communications.

“It’s important to be confident in your expertise and the importance of your role,” Lane said. “School communications professionals should not write curriculum and educators should not write press releases. I believe in being respectful but firm when giving public relations advice.”

She found economical and effective ways to raise a district’s profile and community engagement, but also demonstrated best practices that gave district leaders something to which they could aspire.

“In the Brewster Central School District, Ellen played a major role in branding the strategic plan by identifying the talented professionals to design logos, icons, and materials that supported the district’s plan,” former superintendent Valerie Henning-Piedmonte, Ed.D. said. “In this project, she was able to identify the unique needs of the district and align these needs to industry standards.”

Lane has worked diligently over the years to assemble a strong team with deep, broad expertise. Under her leadership, the team constantly strives to enhance its skills and deepen its understanding of school public relations.

“She has become more than just a supervisor to me,” Laura Belfiore said in her nomination letter. “She has been an inspiration and a mentor. She has assigned me the title of her ‘reverse mentor,’ noting new digital tools, trends and social media best practices she has learned from me. This humility and ability to embrace new methods of communication are additional attributes that do not go unrecognized.”

“We are so fortunate to have so many leaders in school communications around the state of New York, and Ellen is certainly in that category,” NYSPRA president Steve King said. “I’ve been fortunate to work with her over the years and I am thrilled to honor her with this award.”

In addition to her colleagues, several others submitted letters on behalf of Lane. Henrick Hudson Central School District superintendent Joseph E. Hochreiter commended Lane for her ability to lead the communications function.

“I can count on Ellen and the service to ensure that our district follows best practices for school public relations and uses the latest tools to reach our stakeholders. Her demeanor, confidence and resilience has played a large role in my professional success and the increasingly positive reputation of our school district.”

Lane was chosen by a panel of judges who work in school communications outside of New York state.

Jean Palmer named 2020 Communicator of the Year

The New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) is pleased to announce that Jean Palmer, Supervisor of Communications and Printing Services at Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES, has been named the 2020 Communicator of the Year.

The Communicator of the Year award, which is being awarded for the fifth year, is meant to recognize school communications professionals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening relationships between public schools and the students, families and communities they serve. The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.

Palmer oversees a school communications staff of 10 and a printing staff of five, leading both departments with her signature kindness, compassion and integrity, her colleagues say. She began working for OHM BOCES in 2002 as a public relations assistant and later became the senior public relations specialist in 2009, after leaving for a short time to write for SUNY Cortland. She added supervision of the OHM BOCES Print Shop to her duties in the spring of 2019.

“School communication is now more important than it has ever been in my lifetime, as we have all witnessed in the past seven months of this pandemic,” Palmer said. “I am beyond appreciative and honored to have been selected for this award. Without the support of the BOCES administration, the 12 component school districts we serve, and the outstanding team that I have the privilege to work with each day, our communications efforts wouldn’t be possible.”

Palmer has been a part of a large number of successful initiatives at the BOCES during her tenure, including a capital project, development of a new mission statement in 2012, the 65th anniversary celebration, rebranding and new website launches.

“When I think about our school communications leaders across the state, Jean easily comes to mind,” said NYSPRA President Adrienne Leon, APR, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Capital Region BOCES. “I’ve had the fortune of working with her for many years, through NYSPRA as well as BOCES initiatives, and couldn’t be more excited to honor her with this award.

Palmer was nominated by two members of the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES communications team, Public Relations Specialist Rebecca Neary and Graphic Services Supervisor Andrea Rafferty.

“Beyond her many career accomplishments, Jean is also beloved by everyone that she works with. From school superintendents to administrative assistants, both within the OHM BOCES and its component school districts, you won’t find a person who doesn’t love working with Jean. She is friendly, easygoing and always a problem solver. She is continually able to find ways to make sure that everyone has what they need and that they get it on time,” Neary and Rafferty wrote in their nomination letter. “She is always willing to go above and beyond for our BOCES programs and our component school districts, regularly working nights and weekends during the busiest seasons to make sure that projects and print jobs are completed to the highest standards.”

In addition to her colleagues, several others submitted letters on behalf of Palmer. Retired OHM BOCES District Superintendent Howard D. Mettelman commended Palmer for her ability to lead the communications function.

“Ms. Palmer has consistently demonstrated the unique capacity to clearly articulate vision and concept into a comprehensive communications structure. This ability affords the OHM BOCES the opportunity to reach and connect with a broad and diverse array of public audiences,” he says.

Palmer was chosen by a panel of judges who work in school communications outside of New York state.

NYSPRA 2020 Conference Canceled

The NYSPRA Executive Board has decided to cancel the NYSPRA 2020 Annual Conference that was scheduled to be held March 15-17, 2020, in Syracuse.

"I know many of you are concerned about traveling across New York at this time, and as school communicators you are serving as essential personnel in the middle of an unfolding crisis situation," NYSPRA President Adrienne Leon wrote in an email to registrants. "This is bad timing for a conference."

The decision to cancel the conference was not made lightly. The board takes pride in the organization's annual conference and was excited to bring an all-star lineup of workshops and presentations to the more than 80 registered attendees.

Items Attendees Should Consider

- If you have already paid your conference registration fee, that will be refunded. Any checks we have not yet cashed will be returned.

- At this point, you can cancel any hotel or travel reservations you have made. Please note there is a 48-hour cancellation policy before you are responsible for a portion of the room cost.

- The board meeting scheduled for Monday, March 16, 2020, has been canceled.

Please email us at nyspra@nyspra.org or adrienne.leon@neric.org with questions or concerns.

Rebekah Mott named 2019 NYSPRA Communicator of the Year

The New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) is pleased to announce that Rebekah Mott, Manager of Communications and Print Shop at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, has been named the 2019 Communicator of the Year.

The Communicator of the Year award, which is being awarded for the fourth year, is meant to recognize school communications professionals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening relationships between public schools and the students, families and communities they serve. The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.

Mott leads St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES’ Communications Office and has been involved in school communications for the past five years. Prior to joining St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, Mott was an account executive for a public relations firm in Burlington, Vermont, where she represented several national and international brands and businesses, as well as local nonprofits.

“I believe education is the most powerful tool we can give future generations, and when we enhance the stream of communication between the school, parents, and community, everyone wins,” said Mott. “I am honored by this recognition and grateful for the strong partnerships between BOCES and our school districts that make my work possible, and for the support of my stellar communications team.”

This past year, Mott spearheaded the communications and public relations for the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES $43.5 million capital project—the largest capital project in the history of the BOCES, which includes a total renovation of all three CTE centers across the region. Rebekah presented at the American Association of School Administrators conference in Los Angeles on crisis management, the NYSPRA conference on the BOCES capital project campaign, as well as the NYSSBA conference on the Agriculture Academy. She was recently named one of the 20 Under 40 of the North Country.

"We are thrilled to announce that Rebekah Mott is our 2019 Communicator of the Year,” said NYSPRA President Adrienne Leon, APR, Director of Communications at Capital Region BOCES. “Rebekah is well known throughout the state for her work and we’re so proud to honor her.”

Mott was nominated by St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES District Superintendent Thomas R. Burns.

“While there are talented communications professionals at BOCES and school districts all across the state, I can honestly say that I’ve seen none that have had the impact in such a short period of time that Rebekah Mott has had,” Burns wrote. “Although there are larger communications departments at some of the marquis BOCES near urban centers, Rebekah has taken a department of one person, herself, and grown it into a department of 3 professionals who have now merged with our print shop to form a group of nearly a dozen people who serve all of our districts as well as schools in the FEH BOCES. She has earned the trust and faith of school administrators and board of education members who now habitually see her as the solution and the first phone call to help them with a wide variety of projects, PR campaigns, news media interviews, press releases and publications.”

Mott was chosen by a panel of judges who work in school communications outside of New York state.

The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.

Marshall leads Nassau BOCES’ Communications Office and has been involved in school communications for the past 11 years. Prior to joining Nassau BOCES, she was a communications specialist for New York Institute of Technology, a global university with multiple campuses.

“I am humbled and honored to receive the 2018 Communicator of the Year Award,” Marshall said. “I would like to thank all of the great school communicators who have patiently mentored me throughout the years, providing support, guidance and friendship. I share this honor with the communications staff at Nassau BOCES who are dedicated to helping the agency achieve its mission in support of the 56 school districts in Nassau County.”

Marshall served as president of NYSPRA from May 2015 through May 2017. During her tenure as president, the organization hired an outside consultant to help run the day-to-day aspects of the nonprofit and moved the annual conference to a new location for the first time in more than a decade. She is currently on the NYSPRA board as the immediate past president until her term ends in May 2019. She has also been active with Long Island’s professional school communicators association.

In addition to being active in New York, Marshall has presented at several National School Public Relations Association seminars, has served as a panelist for the Urban Education Leaders Collaborative conference at Teachers College Columbia University, and has guest lectured for Hofstra University’s Public Relations program. She also collaborated on NSPRA’s publication “Rubrics of Practice and Suggested Measures.”

"We are very excited to announce Angela Marshall as our 2018 Communicator of the Year,” said Public Information Coordinator of Corning-Painted Post Area School District and NYSPRA President Bill Cameron. “Angela has not only made an impact in her own organization, but her expertise and guidance is a major component in the continued success of NYSPRA.”

Marshall was nominated by colleague Jake Mendlinger, who works with the public relations agency Zimmerman/Edelson Inc.

“Angela is an industry leader,” Mendlinger wrote in his nomination letter, which detailed Marshall’s work throughout the past decade, including a recent Get to Know Us campaign, which has helped to change the community’s understanding of Nassau BOCES.

She was chosen by a panel of judges who work in school communications outside of New York state.

NYSPRA is a non-profit membership organization that serves school communications professionals and administrators in New York State. For more information, visit www.nyspra.org or follow NYSPRA on Twitter @NYSPRA.
