The New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) is pleased to announce that Evelyn McCormack, owner of Mack Digital Communications, has been named the 2017 Communicator of the Year. McCormack is from White Plains, N.Y.
The Communicator of the Year award, which is being awarded for the second year, is meant to recognize school communications professionals who demonstrate a commitment to strengthening relationships between public schools and the students, families and communities they serve. The award honors those who recognize that communication and public relations are a critical component of school leadership.
McCormack has been involved in school communications for the past 23 years, working as head of the BOCES Communications Department at Southern Westchester BOCES, as well as at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES and Scarsdale Public Schools. Prior to that she had a long career as a daily newspaper editor and reporter.
Upon her retirement, she opened her own business, Mack Digital Communications, which assists school districts and nonprofits with communications services.
"I am so humbled to be recognized as NYSPRA’s 2017 Communicator of the Year, and thrilled to be nominated by my hard-working colleagues and friends," McCormack said. "I share this award with all school communicators. Every day—and many nights—you work hard to tell the stories of your students. And in doing that, you honor them and the public schools they attend."
McCormack is known in the school communications realm for her digital storytelling and social media work. She previously served as vice president at large for communication technology & innovation for the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA). She has presented at NSPRA’s last eight national conferences, each time drawing large crowds. She has also graciously presented at NYSPRA, NJSPRA, ConnSPRA, PennSPRA, MOSPRA and INSPRA conferences, and at many New York State School Boards Association and New York State Council of School Superintendents conferences as well.
"We are thrilled to announce Evelyn McCormack as our 2017 Communicator of the Year. She is not only highly respected and a mentor for those of us in New York, but her passion, knowledge, skills and expertise of all things school PR is well known coast to coast," said Public Information Coordinator of Corning-Painted Post Area School District and NYSPRA President Bill Cameron, who has known McCormack for several years. "The Board offers her our congratulations and we thank Jim VanDevelde for his nomination letter."
McCormack was nominated by colleague James VanDevelde, director of communications in the Lakeland Central School District, who said that her willingness to give back to her profession is admirable.
"One of Evelyn's most outstanding traits has been her willingness to share her expertise, especially in social media, beyond her business," he said. "She is always willing to help out a fellow school PR colleague."
